Lily

VIRUSES IN LILY

Lily is a host plant for a wide range of viruses and Rhodococcus fascians. Infestation by virus or Rhodococcus causes symptoms, reduced growth and/or failure. In addition, its presence is a source of spread. Lily mosaic virus (LMoV), Symptomless lily virus (LSV) and Plantaga asiatico mosaic virus (PlAMV) are the main viruses found in lily. However, other viruses also occur in lily such as Arabismo mosaic virus (ArMV) and Strawberry latent ringspot virus (SLRSV). These are an important viruses for the export of lilies to Asian countries.

At BQ Support, ELISA and/or PCR testing capabilities are available for a wide range of pathogens.

LMoV in lily often shows flower breakage starting from the flower base. Depending on the cultivar, symptoms vary. For selection, recognition of symptoms on the leaf is most important because during cultivation lilies are budded before they flower. LMoV can be recognized on the leaf by a mosaic color break of light/dark green or green/red. In addition, an LMoV infestation can cause the position of the leaf or stem to deviate.

Bundles

In order to speed up the flow of samples in the laboratory, for PCR testing has been chosen to offer 6 virus bundles:

Bundle A
PlAMV

Bundle B
PlAMV and TVX

Bundle C
PlAMV, LMoV/A and LSV

Bundle D
PlAMV, TVX and ArMV

Bundle E

Bacteria

A PCR test is available for Rhodococcus fascians. This test shows besides infected bulbs also latently infected bulbs. With this test you can identify the risk batches or cultivars on your farm.
