VIRUSES IN TULIP

Tulip is a host plant for a wide range of viruses and fungi. An infestation by virus or fungus causes symptoms, reduced growth and/or failure. In addition, its presence is a source of spread. Tulip mosaic virus (TBV), Tulip virus X (TVX) and Fusarium oxysporum tulipae are the most important pathogens that are commonly found. However, other viruses and fungi also occur in tulip such as Arabismo mosaic virus (ArMV). This is an important virus for the export of tulips to Asian countries.

At BQ Support, ELISA and/or PCR testing capabilities are available for a wide range of pathogens.

TBV in tulip often shows flower breakage starting from the flower base. Depending on the cultivar, symptoms vary. From very clear symptoms to a small stripe at the beginning of the flower base. Infestation by TBV is also visible on the leaf. A mosaic-shaped color break of light/dark green or green/red is then visible in the early season. After flowering, similar symptoms are also visible again on the leaf and/or flower stem.

Fungus

A PCR test is available for Fusarium oxysporum tulipae. This test shows besides infected bulbs also latently infected bulbs. With this test you can identify the risk batches or cultivars on your farm.
